چکیده
It is well known that the gut microbiota regulates homeostasis of the digestive system; however, the mechanisms involved have been difficult to uncover. By manipulating the germ environment of Drosophila alongside genomic analyses of its symbiont, Acetobacter pomorum, Shin et al. (2011) deduce a pathway that relies on the collaboration between a bacterial enzymatic reaction and the host insulin signaling pathway. Drosophila play host to five main species of bacteria; completely wiping out the microbiota in germ-free larvae is lethal in a specific-diet condition, with these larvae only reaching 10% of the size of wild-type before they expire. The authors show that recolonization by A. pomorum alone is sufficient to restore development and growth rate. To identify mutants that no longer restored growth in recolonized germ-free larvae, Shin et al. constructed a draft genome of A. pomorum and screened a newly generated mutant library. This effort uncovered a number

Integration of genomics and proteomics into marine microbial ecology
Genomics and proteomics of microorganisms are revolutionizing our understanding of marine microbial ecology. In this essay we address this by discussing (1) what microbial genome resources are available for marine ecologists, (2) how single-organism genomics and proteomics have revealed new microbial functions in the marine ecosystem, and (3) how the integration of metagenomics, metaproteomics ...
متن کامل70th Anniversary Collection for the Microbiology Society: Microbial Genomics
In the context of the Microbiology Society's 70th anniversary celebration, Microbial Genomics (MGen) is the new baby of the Society's publishing family. Born on 15 July 2015, it is still in its infancy but already showing promising signs, and we have great hopes and expectations for the future. The journal captures a new and expanding area of research, one which is already having a major impact...
متن کاملMicrobial ecology in the age of genomics and metagenomics: concepts, tools, and recent advances.
Microbial ecology examines the diversity and activity of micro-organisms in Earth's biosphere. In the last 20 years, the application of genomics tools have revolutionized microbial ecological studies and drastically expanded our view on the previously underappreciated microbial world. This review first introduces the basic concepts in microbial ecology and the main genomics methods that have be...

متن کاملMicrobial population genomics and ecology.
The origins of biological complexity in microbial ecosystems are encoded within the collective genomes of the community. Cultivation-independent genomic studies provide direct access to the genomes of naturally occurring microbes, cultivated or not. Genome-enabled approaches are now significantly advancing current knowledge of genome content, diversity, population biology and evolution in natur...
